Assistant Principal/In-Home Education Facilitator
Hello! I am Barbara Shepherd, Assistant Principal of The Learning Connection. I joined the great staff here in 2002 and love working with students, families and staff in our friendly, flexible, welcoming centres. I grew up in Camrose and attended Camrose Lutheran College (now Augustana University) and the University of Alberta in Edmonton where I earned a BA in English and Psychology and a BEd with a focus on secondary English and French. I recently completing my Masters of Education through the University of Calgary - I guess it is fair to say I enjoy school! Before moving to Yellowhead County and joining the Grande Yellowhead Public School Division, I taught high school English and French in Beaverlodge and Grande Prairie with the Peace Wapiti School Division (so ... yes, I am old!!).
As Assistant Principal, I have the opportunity to support students, families and staff in a number of ways. As TLC's Learning Support Teacher, I explore ways in which we can help every student succeed, including offering specialized assessments, modifying materials, providing appropriate accommodations and connecting students and families with GYPSD's Learning Services and community agencies for additional supports. In my role as Home Education Facilitator, I support families of students in grades 1-9 who wish to participate in in-home, blended or traditional home education programs, providing appropriate materials and supervising exams as well as offering assistance in our centres as needed. In addition, I greatly enjoy working with our students in our centres and on our Try-It Tuesdays and field trips where we provide opportunities for hands-on learning experiences. The diversity of opportunities and programs that we strive to offer to support student needs and interests is one of the aspects of TLC that makes it such a great place to work and learn.
I look forward to seeing you often in our centres in Edson, Evansburg, Grande Cache, Hinton and Jasper whether in person or by videoconference or Google Hangout and welcome your visits, emails, calls and texts any time you have any questions or concerns. If there is anything I can do to support you in your studies, please do not hesitate to contact me (email firstname.lastname@example.org or text/phone 780-712-7015).
Best wishes for the 2019-20 school year!
